RAINBOW EDUCATION COALTION LOS ANGELES

RECLA: Making LAUSD Schools Safer for LGBTQ+ Students

RECLA (Rainbow Education Coalition Los Angeles) is a community coalition—anyone is welcome to join—working to ensure LGBTQ+  students are safe, supported, and protected through real accountability, policy implementation, and long-term investment across LAUSD.

Leadership Labs Youth Summit Registration

The Leadership Labs Youth Summit is to provide queer youth of color, their families, and allies a space to network and empower themselves while discovering ways to positively impact their community.

Join us for a dynamic day that will include:
  • INVIGORATING WORKSHOPS
  • DELICIOUS FOOD
  • DAZZLING ENTERTAINMENT
  • and A RESOURCE FAIR!

Our wins

RECLA is already delivering results:

  • $2 million increase in the LAUSD budget to provide LGBTQ+ support across all schools in the 2025–2026 school year.
  • RECLA is working with the district to hire an LGBTQ+ liaison at all LAUSD schools—a dedicated point of support students can count on.

The challenge

The bell rings, but for many LGBTQ+  students in LAUSD, the silence that follows can feel heavy. Too often, students face harm, isolation, or systems that look the other way—even when policies exist on paper.

RECLA formed because safety and belonging require follow-through: consistent implementation, clear accountability, and resources that reach every campus.

Our mission

RECLA’s mission is to ensure the well-being and safety of LGBTQ+  students by holding LAUSD accountable for implementation of policies and allocation of resources that transform cultural and structural systems to end transphobia, homophobia, white supremacy, and cis-heteropatriarchy.

How RECLA supports change

RECLA equips our community with a shared strategy to move LAUSD from promises to practice.

Through the coalition, participants:

  • Track what policies look like in real life on campuses
  • Push for district-level accountability
  • Advocate for resources and staffing that support LGBTQ+  students
  • Build community power so students aren’t fighting alone

Anyone is welcome—youth, caregivers, educators, allies, and community members.

What it’s like to be part of RECLA

Create an LGBTQ+ accountability board at the District to ensure continuous oversight and real transparency.

Goals—not just words

Require LGBTQ+ goals and objectives in every school’s “Single Plan for Student Achievement” so student safety and success are measurable, not optional.

Sustainable change

Secure multi-year investment in the budget so LGBTQ+ support is built to last—not a one-time effort.
